Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta 2002
85% Carmenere-Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep and intense red purple color. Complex and seductive nose of red fruits, blackberries, black cherry and raspberry, mixed with toasted notes of vanilla, black chocolate and coffee. In the mouth, the wine is only density, volume, and fullness. The exceptional quality of its tannins gives the wine not only a fine and smooth texture, but also a well-structured character, for a great aging potential. The finish is long, velvety and silky. Wine Spectator Beautiful color, with vivid boysenberry and blackberry fruit flavors that easily handle the layers of vanilla-tinged toast. Roasted herb, brier and black currant notes run through the finish, which shows the firm edge of the vintage, but a superb effort nonetheless. Carmenère, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2009. 3,150 cases made. Score: 93. —James Molesworth, March 31, 2005.Wine Advocate The Clos Apalta luxury cuvee, primarily based on an old vine, non-irrigated Carmenere parcel, remains one of Chile’s standard-bearers. Displaying aromas of sweet, spicy cassis, the 2002 Clos Apalta is a concentrated, medium to full-bodied wine with intense black cherry, black currant liqueur, spice, and pepper flavors. This serious, focused, well-structured effort is jam-packed with fruit, and reveals a lengthy, tannin-studded finish. It should be drunk over the next 7-8 years. Score: 92. —Pierre Rovani, June 2005. Wine Enthusiast Saturated and rich, with meaty, forceful aromas of black fruit, molasses and toasted marshmallow. A blend of Carmenère, Cabernet and Merlot that’s full of cassis, black cherry and a light herbaceousness. Lush but structured; a real big boy. Score: 92. March 01, 2005. |
